Mica is a rock-forming mineral in the earth's crust, and is a general term for a group of minerals. Mica group minerals are aluminosilicate ore with complex chemical composition, the main elements include potassium, sodium, magnesium, iron and lithium in addition to silicon, aluminum and oxygen. In addition, natural mica group minerals are more common in the isomorphous of homogeneous substitution and contain other minor elements such as manganese, titanium, gallium, barium, sulfur, etc.
Depending on the mica elements and their contents, the mica group can be divided into three subgroups: Muscovite mica, biotite mica and lepidolite.
Mica has excellent mechanical properties. The Mohs hardness of mica is 2-3; mica flakes have certain elasticity and flexural properties; mica has excellent bending strength, as well as high tensile and compressive and shear strength.
Mica has excellent insulating properties and is a typical insulating material. The volume resistivity of mica is extremely high, especially in the direction perpendicular to the perfect cleavage surface of the mica. Thanks to its laminar structure, mica has a very high surface resistance. Compared to other insulating materials, the tangent of dielectric loss angle of mica is very small and the dielectric loss is low.
Mica is non-combustible and has excellent heat resistance with a maximum temperature resistance level of 1000°C. It has a low thermal conductivity and great insulation properties, a superior fireproof material.
Mica is a two-dimensional laminated crystal structure with eminent cleavage surface, so it is easy to be processed into two-dimensional plane composite materials (such as mica plates), but it is difficult to process in other directions. Our company has formulated a series of mica fireproof safety parts with complex 3D structure through special formulations and processing techniques, which has improved the processing performance of mica.
When mica plates is insulated from heat, if it’s high temperature, it will produce smoke in a short period of time with a relatively light smell of glue, why? This is because the cured glue in the finished mica plates contains a small amount of organic components, which will decompose under high temperature and can be finished within a short time. Please be assured the decomposed odor is non-toxic.
